The combination of a rack and gear is called "rack and pinion," and they're used in lifting and positioning mechanisms like automotive steering systems, machine tools and CNC routers, valves, and conveyor systems. A helical rack is a bar shaped gear with slanted linear tooth trace that is used when silence and high speed rotation are required, and it can be meshed with a helical gear.
